PGA Tour's 2028 'Premier League' Plan
The PGA Tour, under the guidance of CEO Brian Rolapp, is preparing for a radical transformation set to launch in 2028. The plan introduces a two-tiered, Premier League-style ecosystem designed to inject new competitive drama and meritocracy into the professional golf calendar.
The new structure will feature a top "Championship Series" and a secondary "Challenger Series." The elite Championship Series will host fields of at least 120 players competing for lucrative $20 million purses. Meanwhile, the Challenger Series will offer more playing opportunities with larger fields of 144 players and purses of approximately $4 million. To ensure season-long stakes, a promotion and relegation system will be implemented, with 20 players moving up to the top tier and 20 being sent down each season. The proposal has already garnered support from key players. Veteran Billy Horschel has publicly endorsed the idea of removing sponsor exemptions from the Championship Series, advocating for a purely merit-based system. He believes using the FedEx Cup points list to fill fields would create a more transparent and equitable pathway for all members.Historically, the overhaul is being framed by some as a return to the core principles of the Tour. Veteran Ryan Armour views the changes as a restoration of former commissioner Deane Beman's vision, which prioritized broad playing opportunities for the entire membership. This philosophy, Armour suggests, was compromised during the recent era of exclusive "signature events," and the 2028 plan aims to bring back a more balanced and accessible competitive structure.Chat is empty
